HR 875 = KILL IT!

This is what I wrote to my local rep. in Congress.

I'm writing in reference to HR 875. Please do everything in your power to defeat the passing of this legislation. The very concept is offensive and dangerous. The idea that the government could outlaw natural and essential farming practices that have been perfected over thousands of years of human history is unthinkable.

Could we please (in its place) see legislation that restricts the use of harmful chemicals invented by corporations to narrow and monopolize all agricultural practice and diversity in the US? Despite the arguments from the corporations paying for this legislation there is significant evidence that the practices outlined in the bill will have some very grave consequences. They will have complete authority to manage and diminish the genetic diversity of our crops through seed management and genetic modification. They will Further destroy our health by mandating and increasing the use of pesticides and antibiotics that are proven to cause damage to our groundwater and the humans and animals who consume them. The irony is that they claim to act out of concern for our health.

The past several years have seen organic farming boom in the US. It is one of the healthiest and fastest growing business sectors in the nation (yes, the puns are awesome and unavoidable). It seems pretty clear that corporatized farming interests are waging war on competitors through legislation with this bill. I realize that this is how things currently work in America but is it how we want them to work? Is it right? Is this the best way to do things? I'm asking you to please take part in this process and be a voice for the citizens. You really are one of the only constructive options we have.

HR 875 will give the federal government powers well beyond the scope of what was intended by the founders of this country, many of whom were farmers. By virtue of their placement in time and use of technology you would have to consider them "organic" farmers. Are we to believe that they wanted to be regulated by the government? Why did they not consider such laws and agencies at that time? Obviously they did NOT want to be regulated in such a way and this legislation is unconstitutional. The federal government does not have the power to govern this way even though they do succeed in taking it quite often.

I don't claim to have made every argument possible for my case in this email, just the ones I'm able to make with honesty, information and sincerity. Just a few that come to mind quickly and in a straight enough line that they don't seem too incredible to consider.
